In a significant step toward modernizing law enforcement information systems, CPI OpenFox has implemented a new web service interface for driver queries and responses for the Kentucky State Police. The initiative leverages CPI’s Generic Web Service (GWS) structure and OpenFox® software to streamline the way officers access and process driver information both within Kentucky and across state lines.
CPI installed and configured the OpenFox GWS Interface and set up a new station to communicate directly with the FAST web service. The integration will enable the Kentucky State Police to process a range of driver-related transactions, including driver name queries, driver history inquiries, and responses, with increased efficiency and security.
A key technical focus of the project is enhancing security: all communications were encrypted via Transport Layer Security (TLS v1.2+), and both server and client authentication used digital certificates provided by trusted authorities. CPI also updated the OpenFox Message Switch to support advanced data formats and ensure seamless interoperability with the Nlets National Information Exchange Model (NIEM), a nationwide standard for law enforcement data exchange.
The new system transforms in-state and out-of-state queries into a standardized JSON format for processing by FAST and returns detailed, preformatted responses to end-users. Additionally, CPI provided consulting sessions to assist the Kentucky State Police in developing and implementing the project, demonstrating a commitment to collaboration and support throughout the process.
Notably, the upgrade did not require changes to the existing hardware platform or the addition of third-party products, ensuring a smooth transition for law enforcement agencies. The project underscores Kentucky’s commitment to leveraging modern technology to enhance public safety and improve access to critical driver information.
